How to Search Civil Dockets
The county-linked LGS Online Solutions portal is the main route to both the online index and case images. Pick the office and civil record type first. The search fields change from there depending on what you chose. Official help lists Last Name as one example. The county has not published a full civil field list. So do not assume case-number formats, wildcards, or date filters that Grimes County never announced.
re:SearchTX can widen the view with statewide cases, filings, hearings, and documents where Grimes County and the record type are integrated. It still does not replace the local clerk. eFileTexas is a filing system for lawyers and parties, not a docket research tool. And the county archive posts no readable public civil docket PDF. A dead-end PDF search should send you back to LGS and the clerk who handles that civil docket.
- Determine whether the matter belongs to district, county, family, or justice court.
- Select that office and record type in LGS.
- Search with the exact cause number when known, or the public party field shown.
- Read More Information and preview Images for the matching case.
- Ask the clerk for the named signed order or a certified copy when needed.
Grimes Civil Docket Court Split
Know which office holds the file before you search. The District Clerk keeps district civil, land-title, major civil, and family files. The County Clerk holds County Court and County Court at Law civil records. Three JP precincts keep their own small claims, eviction, and other justice civil dockets. This split matters more than spelling a name right. A correct name searched in the wrong office still returns nothing.
| Matter | Starting office | Record route |
|---|---|---|
| District civil or land title | District Clerk | 12th or 506th District Court |
| County-level civil | County Clerk | County Court or County Court at Law |
| Divorce and family | District Clerk | Family filing route |
| Small claims or eviction | Named JP office | Precinct docket |
One caution on dollar limits. The standing order allocates $200 to $10,000 to Constitutional County Court and $10,000 to $200,000 to County Court at Law, yet the current court page describes jurisdiction up to $325,000. Those numbers clash. Check the current statute and order before picking a court by dollar amount.
What a Civil Docket Shows
A civil register usually tracks the basics. You get the cause number, court, filing date, parties, counsel, instruments, service, settings, orders, disposition, and later enforcement or appeal events. Grimes County publishes no readable civil sample and no official civil code list. The categories above come from the clerk workflow, the forms, and the standard civil event path. Treat them as a framework. They are not a promise that every LGS screen uses the same labels.
| Case identity | Cause number, court assignment, style, and filing date. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Plaintiff or petitioner, defendant or respondent, and other roles. |
| Service | Citation issuance, return, waiver, or other service event. |
| Filings | Petition, answer, motion, response, notice, and exhibits where public. |
| Settings | Motion hearing, docket call, bench trial, jury trial, or status event. |
| Result | Judgment, nonsuit, dismissal, transfer, or other signed order. |
Costs, registry sums, and judgment balances may show up in the financial entries. The exact public LGS labels are not published. Never infer a dollar amount from a short event description.
Grimes Family Filing Clerk
Family law trips people up in Grimes County. The County Court at Law page describes family jurisdiction. It expressly sends family filings to the District Clerk. Divorce, parent-child matters, adoption, termination, name changes, and child-support files all start on the district clerk route. Court jurisdiction and filing-counter custody are simply not the same question. Do not pick the County Clerk just because the court hears family cases.
Some family records are restricted. District Clerk forms include a Certificate of Adoption and Request to Unseal Adoption. That shows Grimes County runs a distinct restricted-record process. Those form titles do not make anyone eligible or guarantee access. Ask the clerk what public index information, redacted image, or court order can be released.
Note: Court jurisdiction and filing-counter custody are related. They are not always the same question.
Types of Civil Cases on the Docket
Civil dockets in Grimes County span several trial levels. District courts take major civil claims, land-title cases, divorce, and anything not allocated elsewhere. County courts handle statutory civil work plus lower-court appeals under the local order. Each JP court keeps its own smaller civil register.
- Contract, debt, and other general civil claims assigned by jurisdiction.
- Property and title-to-land disputes in the proper district court.
- Family cases filed through the District Clerk.
- Small claims and eviction matters in the correct JP precinct.
- Lower-court civil appeals that create a county filing and cross-reference.
Probate and guardianship are separate county-level subjects. Their dockets can look like civil records in some fields. Confirm the clerk and the access rules from the actual case type.
Grimes Civil Docket Event Path
A civil case begins with a petition or complaint. Then comes a court assignment and a filing date. Citation issues next, then service is returned or waived. An answer or appearance follows. Discovery, motions, responses, hearing notices, and orders fill out the middle of the register. A setting may end in a bench trial, jury trial, motion hearing, or docket call.
- Citation
- The formal process used to notify a party of the filed case.
- Setting
- A scheduled court event, not proof that relief was granted.
- Nonsuit
- A plaintiff's voluntary end to a claim, subject to the actual order.
- DWOP
- Common Texas shorthand for dismissal for want of prosecution; Grimes has no published local code list.
- Judgment
- The signed decision that should be read with, not replaced by, the index entry.
Case flow: Petition › Citation and Service › Answer › Motions and Discovery › Setting › Judgment › Post-Judgment.
Settings and Hearings on Civil Dockets
A hearing date can surface in LGS, a notice, or a court calendar. Check it against the newest entry. Also confirm the responsible court. A reset, revised calendar, continuance, or later order can replace an earlier date. Grimes County publishes no stable unified calendar. None covers every district, county, and JP civil matter.
A notice of setting is not the order granting a motion. Read the motion title. Then check the filed date, the hearing date, the signed date, and the result. These are all different events. Default judgment, agreed judgment, nonsuit, transfer, and dismissal for want of prosecution each mean something distinct. The word "closed" never substitutes for the signed paper. For a county setting, call 936-873-4472; district and JP matters go through their own clerk.
Grimes Civil Docket Image Routes
The re:SearchTX public access layer can supplement a county search where integration exists.

A statewide view may show case activity for Grimes County. Verify current coverage before relying on it, and treat a blocked result as a prompt to check the clerk, not as proof no case exists. eFileTexas is the official filing route for lawyers and parties.

A filing receipt only tells you something was submitted. It proves nothing about acceptance, indexing, or release of a public document image.
The District Clerk forms directory on the Grimes County site gives you the local copy and process route.

When the public index does not carry the paper you need, those forms point you back to the clerk. The Request for Copies, Civil Process Request, and post-judgment forms each serve that purpose in a Grimes County civil docket search.
Grimes Civil Docket Copy Options
Something you download yourself is not a certified copy. The District Clerk fee sheet, effective June 1, 2025, spells out the charges: a $5 record search, paper copies at $1 per page, digital copies at $0.10 per page with a $1 document minimum, and a $5 certification or exemplification surcharge added to copying costs. Check current charges before you order anything from the Grimes County clerk.
| Copy | Published fee | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Paper | $1 per page | Plain clerk copy |
| Digital | $0.10 per page, $1 minimum | Electronic delivery where available |
| Certified | $5 plus copying | Clerk certification |
| Exemplified | $5 plus copying | Additional formal authentication |
Mail requests should name the cause number, the document, and the filing date, plus a stamped return envelope as directed. No local turnaround is promised. Transcripts come from the court reporter rather than the clerk, and Grimes County publishes no reporter rate.
Public Access to Civil Dockets
For filed case records, start with the clerk. Texas Rule of Civil Procedure 76a governs sealing. Rule 21c covers sensitive data in filings. A public register can still show a notice, an order, or a gap. A sealed document stays hidden. Juvenile, adoption, medical, mental-health, and other protected data may be withheld or redacted.
Grimes County offers several access routes for a civil court docket. Options include LGS, re:SearchTX where integrated, the District Clerk or County Clerk counter, phone, published email or fax, and written mail requests. Justice court cases go through the correct JP office. The county PIA email handles administrative public information. It is not a workaround for sealed case papers.
Access rules:
Texas Rules of Civil Procedure 76a and 21c govern sealing and sensitive-data handling.
Texas Rule of Judicial Administration 12 applies to non-case judicial records and its listed exceptions.
Texas Government Code Chapter 552 covers county administrative records, not the ordinary clerk case-file route.
